Thinking about volunteering but unsure what it involves? Read on!
Our service has several different types of volunteers: Ambulance Drivers, Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), and Rescue personnel (who may be EMRs or EMTs). See below for a more detailed description of these roles
Most volunteers start with us as either drivers or EMRs. We offer driver training, as well as the EMR course, at our Salisbury headquarters. There is no cost for the training if you plan to join our squad.
The EMR course is approximately 60 hours. We offer this as an evening course, and our Squad members provide support and skill practices to assist you in passing the state and national exams.
Majority of calls are non-traumatic, requiring lower levels of medical intervention.
While some Squad members choose to put themselves on our monthly call duty schedule, others choose to listen in to the dispatch radio when they are available and respond when they are able.
We recognize that some volunteers have predictable work/life schedules, while others do not - as long as you are going out on calls, we are flexible about when you do it.
Throughout training and on all calls, our experienced EMTs provide guidance and support. You are ALWAYS part of a team response.
There are several different types of volunteers:
-
Ambulance Driver
As part of the EMS team, you will be trained in vehicle and related radio operations. Responsibilities include assisting EMR’s and EMT’s in patient preparation and transport to the appropriate medical facility. SVAS membership plus initial CPR/AED/First Aid; Hazmat; and Blood borne/Airborne Pathogen Training required. Minimum age 21 with 5 years clean driving record, passing of physical and passing of classroom and on-road course training required. You will be encouraged to achieve EMR status.
-
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
You will be trained as a prehospital care provider with the basic level of certification. The State EMR course is approximately 60 hours, which we offer as an evening course at our headquarters in Salisbury. After completion of the course, both a practical and written test are required for certification. Squad members assist in preparing EMR candidates for both tests.
-
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
EMT is the highest level of certification that SVAS is approved to have as part of our squad. Every ambulance call requires at least one EMT to be part of the response team. As an EMT candidate, you will be trained and certified to appraise and initiate the administration of emergency care for victims of trauma or acute illness before or during transport of the victims to the appropriate medical facility via vehicle or aircraft. National EMT course (approximately 150 hours) will be offered locally when possible, or we will assist you in locating an online national EMT course. A national written and practical test are required for certification.
-
Rescue
You will be trained in rescue on-scene operations including extrication of victims from motor vehicles, and participation in trail and other search and rescue operations. SVAS membership plus ambulance driver qualification plus additional Rescue training required. You will be encouraged to achieve EMR status.
